Constitution Day - Sculpted vision of freedom
Every year, on 26 November, we honour the document that turned a dream of democracy into reality—the Constitution of India. Once known as Law Day, this day took on a new significance in October 2015. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the 'Statue of Equality' (Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial) in Mumbai, he made an announcement that this day would henceforth be celebrated as 'Constitution Day.' Historically, the day marks the momentous adoption of our constitution, which started on 26 November in 1949. This document establishes the framework that outlines the fundamental political code, structures, procedures, powers and responsibilities of government institutions. It also articulates the fundamental rights, directive principles and duties of citizens.
In addition to highlighting the significance of this supreme legal document, Constitution Day also promotes the thoughts and ideas of B.R. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the constitution. Featured here is his statue in Dharwad, Karnataka. A prominent jurist, economist, social reformer and political leader, Ambedkar was made the Chairman of the Drafting committee of the constitution. As a champion of the marginalised, his contribution to country's social and political fabric is unparalleled.
